My Role: Production Designer
When a Beast attacks, its huntress and its protector both re-evaluate their beliefs as they’re lowered to the status of prey.
Beasts is a story about the human reaction to a viral threat and the fickle anatomy of the human psyche in the face of fear. Set in a not-so-distant future where the sun burns everything it touches, society lives in constant fear of beasts, the zombie like disease that hides within human hosts.
Beasts has been my most challenging project to date, with a full studio build on no budget, SFX, intractable props, custom original costumes and all filmed in black and white. I did extensive research on the process of production designers of the black and white film period and how they utilised greyscale and texture to tell a story without colour. I used chocolate sauce instead of fake blood, as Hitchcock did in Psycho. I loved interweaving our current world with the horrors of the world our characters live in, it served as a terrifying backdrop for this mystery/thriller. Creating an original weapon design for this project was my favourite part - see below some behind the scenes of my process.
